hey Toby, I like that you pointed out that in terms of religion, faith or belief identities at UAL the policy doesn’t appear to be ‘compulsory’. this in conjunction with the mistakes around the duration and naming of the chinese/ lunar new year does not make one feel like this is an important issue to UAL. I would also like to point out that maybe lunar new year might be confusing to some as other religions e.g. Judaism and Islam follow the lunar calendar. Do you think this could have something to do with that?
Hi Toby, I agree with you that these types of multi-faith calendars are not very in-depth and are generally there as a guide and are possibly a way of ticking a box rather than something meaningful. I have always thought that we should change our bank holidays to reflect other faith holidays. it would be a good way for English people to understand other cultures and stop people from other faiths from having to take an annual leave day to celebrate their special day/days. I understand that this is also a simplification of something that would be quite complicated.
I also think that you are on to something about school holidays, however, personally, I’d just change the easter holidays, make it a set date every year and move away from something that moves around. We really need to move away from something that gives us a short/long term in either the spring or summer term.
